I work closely with students to master the basics, strengthen problem-solving, and reduce math anxiety. I am a certified teacher with 20 years in the classroom, a parent, and an experienced successful tutor. There are many reasons parents have sought my help as a tutor for Algebra 1. Each situation is different and each student is different. Some have moved to a new neighborhood and have been confronted with higher expectations in their math class. Others had a family situation that took the student out of school for a period of time where important foundational information was covered in class. Further, the class size may have strained the teacher's resources to the point where your student did not get the attention they needed to master the material sufficiently. Also, some times math is not yet the student's favorite subject and they need confidence as well as skill building and some exposure to ideas about how math is used in their area of interest.
Please get help for your student if their prealgebra grade was below a B. I can promise you they will not enjoy taking Geometry next year while retaking Algebra 1. I would not wish this scenario on any student.
